Could Alabama Hire Georgia Defensive Coordinator Glenn Schumann?

Now that Nick Saban has retired, could Alabama potentially hire Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann?

The news officially broke. Alabama football head coach Nick Saban officially retired from the game of college football just a few days after the national championship game. Some of the biggest news to hit the landscape in quite some time, but now the search for a new head coach to follow in Saban's footsteps has begun.

Many names are already starting to be thrown into the mix such as Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and many other headliner names in college football. But perhaps the name that Georgia fans will be keeping the closest eye on throughout this process in defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann.

Before coming to Georgia, Schumann was a coach alongside both Kirby Smart and Saban at Alabama for nine years. He is also a graduate from the University of Alabama. While with the Crimson Tide, Schumann served as a student assistant for a few years, which then led him into a graduate assistant role and later would be named the linebackers coach under Smart who was the defensive coordinator there at the time.

Schumann made the transition to Georgia with Smart in 2016, and has remained loyal to the program ever since. However, due to the Bulldogs' recent success, specifically on the defensive side of the ball, many began to wonder when Schumann would get an opportunity of his own.

Last offseason in 2023, a discussion sparked up about the Philadelphia Eagles reaching out to Schumann about becoming their defensive coordinator. In early February it would be announced that the Georgia defensive coach elected to stay in Athens and not make the jump to the NFL.

Right before the start of the 2023 college football season, Schumann talked about why he has continued to stay at Georgia and not take another job. Here is what he said:

"There's a lot of ways to define the quality of life. One, you're responsible as a husband and a father to do what's best for you and your family and their well-being. My family is extremely happy here. Two, quality of life in this profession is generally tied to winning, and I have been very fortunate between both being here and at Alabama that we have been extremely successful, so I have a high expectation and standard for what I want to achieve in my career. Beyond that, I think a lot of men, women, people in general, people always talk about the grass isn't always greener, and when you look at it, there's been a lot of people who have been extremely happy, and they tried to be happier, and they wound up miserable... There's a lot of reasons to still be at Georgia."

The Alabama head coaching search will be one of the more prominent topics in the news cycle until the Crimson Tide ultimately makes a decision. As mentioned before, a lot of names are already being thrown into the mix, so only time will tell who the legitimate candidates will be, and if Schumann's name will be in the running.
