Updated ACC Basketball Standings (1/22): North Carolina Continues to Pull Away
Another week goes by and it looks like the only national contender the ACC has is in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels continue to impress and have won eight games in a row and all of them have come by double-digits, the latest being a win vs Boston College. North Carolina faces Wake Forest tonight and then travels to Florida State for their second matchup with the Seminoles.
There was some shuffling around in the middle and you can expect that every week in this year's ACC. The battle to see who ends up in the top four is going to be an intriguing one. NC State, Florida State, and Wake Forest are all 5-2 in the conference, while Duke is 4-2. The Blue Devils are coming off a shocking home loss to Pitt. Duke is still one of the nation's most talented teams, but they don't show that dominance in the same way North Carolina does.
Virginia picked up wins against Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech to get back on a winning streak, while Syracuse also had a 2-0 week. Miami, who was at one point thought to be a conference contender, lost to Florida State and to Syracuse and looks like more of a pretender at this point, which is disappointing considering their run to the Final Four a year ago.
Virginia Tech and Clemson had 1-1 weeks and continue to be mildly disappointing. Boston College lost to the Tar Heels this week but did beat Notre Dame and stayed ahead of the Fighting Irish in the Standings.
Pitt, Georgia Tech, and Louisville remain at the bottom of the conference, but Pitt did have the win against Duke and the Yellow Jackets notched a double-overtime victory over Clemson this week as well.
