Georgia Tech Finishes With Fourth-Ranked Transfer Class In The ACC

The Yellow Jackets added 12 transfers in the first transfer period

The first transfer window has been closed for a couple of weeks and the final signing period for the class of 2023 is today. While Georgia Tech did not do much on the final day of the 2023 signing period, the rankings for the recruiting classes and transfer classes have shuffled and Georgia Tech finds themselves sitting in the top half of the ACC transfer rankings.

Overall, this transfer class finished 24th in the country

The Yellow Jackets have signed 12 transfers and filled a lot of key positions ahead of spring practice. The only schools that finished ahead of Georgia Tech in the 247Sports transfer rankings were Florida State, Miami, and North Carolina. The Seminoles had one of, if not the best, transfer classes in the country and they had the best class in the ACC by a decent margin.

While Florida State and Miami separated themselves as the top two, Georgia Tech was not far from coming in third and jumping North Carolina. The Tar Heels finished with 46.93 transfer points and Tech finished with 44.49.

This transfer class is hoping to help propel Brent Key and Tech into a bowl game in 2023 and I think this coaching staff did a good job of upgrading positions of need, such as wide receiver and linebacker.

Let's break down the Georgia Tech transfer class.

Haynes King

Starting this off at quarterback, Texas A&M transfer Haynes King figures to battle Zach Pyron and Zach Gibson for the starting job this spring and into the fall.

King is a former four-star recruit for the Aggies and won the starting job twice. His 2021 season was cut short after being injured early in the season. He started the 2022 season off as the starter but was benched after Texas A&M was upset by App State. He did return as the starter and had his best game on the road against Alabama, a game in which he threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns.

At running back, Louisville transfer Trevion Cooley will look to bring depth and playmaking ability to the backfield.  Cooley ran for 709 yards and three touchdowns and averaged 4.9 yards per carry. Cooley is going to be a big factor in the backfield for Georgia Tech next season and he was a good addition through the portal.

Wide receiver is where Georgia Tech made their best and most impactful additions. The Yellow Jackets lost five wide receivers this offseason and it was already a position of weakness.

Chase Lane (Texas A&M), Christian Leary (Alabama), and Abdul Janneh (Duquesne) all figure to make an impact next fall.

Lane has 48 catches for 617 yards and two touchdowns in his career and figures to be an immediate contributor for the Yellow Jackets. Janneh is projected to be an outside receiver with his size and ball skills and I think that is the thing that stands out the most when watching him play. Last season, he caught 43 passes for 579 yards and was very good at catching the ball in traffic and winning his matchups. Leary is a former top 100 recruit from the class of 2021 and signed with Alabama. During his two seasons with the Crimson Tide, Leary only tallied three catches for 10 yards, but he still has potential. The 5'10 175 LBS wide receiver should compete for playing time immediately. Georgia Tech flipped Leary from UCF.

Brett Seither

Tight end was one of the most disappointing positions for the Yellow Jackets last season, with no tight end catching a touchdown or topping 100 total yards. New offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner is bringing Brett Seither with him from Georgia and Jackson Long is coming from USF. Neither player has been in a starting role yet, so there might be a learning curve, but both guys have potential.

The offensive line saw one transfer come in and that was Charlotte's Jordan Brown. Brown was a redshirt freshman for the Charlotte 49ers in 2022 after redshirting his first year on campus in 2021. He has three years of eligibility left. This past season, Brown played 62 offensive snaps over the course of the season including 24 snaps against Maryland in week two for Charlotte. All of his snaps on offense were at the left tackle spot.

247Sports' highest-rated transfer that is coming to Tech is Clemson defensive line transfer Etinosa Reuben. Georgia Tech is having to replace Keion White and while Reuben might not be at that level of talent yet, he has solid potential. Reuben is a former three-star recruit and top 500 player from Park Hill South High School in Missouri and during his time with the Clemson Tigers, Reuben tallied 19 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Georgia Tech is losing Charlie Thomas and Ace Eley at linebacker and they were one of the top linebacker duos in the ACC. Having to replace a pair of 100+ tackle players is tough, but this coaching staff did a good job of doing so.

Braelen Oliver (Minnesota), Andre White Jr, and Austin Dean (Rutgers) figure to compete for immediate playing time in 2023.

Oliver has amassed 79 tackles, three pass deflections, 3.5 sacks, and one forced fumble. I fully expect Oliver to challenge for one of the starting spots that have been vacated by Eley and Thomas. During his career in College Station, White tallied up 61 tackles, six pass deflections, one forced fumble, and an interception. He was a four-star recruit in the 2019 class. Dean (6'2, 225 LBS) registered 18 tackles. He is a former three-star recruit in the 2020 class and played his high school football at Berkeley Prep in Tampa, FL.

These guys make up one of the best transfer classes in the ACC all of these players have the potential to step on the field and help Georgia Tech push for a bowl game in 2023.
