Everything from Georgia Tech DB's coach Travares Tillman post practice 8/16
Wednesday for Georgia Tech this week was the day for the defensive backs to speak to the media. The Yellow Jackets have a chance to have one of the better secondaries in the ACC with the return of safeties LaMiles Brooks, Jaylon King, Clayton Powell-Lee, and cornerback Myles Sims. There are newcomers as well and they have a chance to be nice additions with the veterans.
Speaking first on Wednesday was defensive backs coach Travares Tillman and here is everything that he said post-practice:
1. On the safety position...
"I have three guys that can go out and perform at a high level so we are lucky in that aspect. They have mutual respect for each other so whoever is playing the best is going to get on the field and there are no questions about it so I enjoy that about my room so whoever is playing well is going to get the burn on the field."
2. On the nickel position...
"We obviously have K.J. there and we have Omar Daniels who is here now so they are both playing there and playing well, there is no edge right now so I don't know who is going to be that guy but they are both playing at a high level right now and it is always a good thing when you have options so again, camp is now over and decisions are not done there and we are going to continue to evaluate."
3. On if he has a timetable to decide who is going to be where...
"Not really a timetable, but this next scrimmage should tell me a lot ut not really a timetable because everyone gets better each and every day and it is always a work in progress and I never put an end to anything because you never know how someone is going to jump out even on that last day so it is still open for everyone."
4. On the return of Jaylon King from injury and what it means to the DB room...
"Oh my God he is having a great camp right now and he is respected in that room and he does not even have to say much, he can go out and practice the way he is and it says a lot. I am going to dance at that kids wedding whenever he gets married man because that is the type of player that he is and he is always working. He takes every day so serious and it is just a good example for those younger guys in that room to learn from him."
5. On the cornerback competition...
"It is open just like every other position is back there. Again, injuries happen so sometimes you just have to wait things out to kind of see, you never want to count someone out just because they are down for a minute so that competition will continue throughout camp and even through game week, who knows but I am going to continue to evaluate those guys and when it is time to suit up for that first game, the best cornerback will be out there."
6. On the progression of Clayton Powell-Lee and Rodney Shelley...
"Obviously CP is still working his way back a little bit and Rodney Shelley has moved to the outside a little bit and trying to give us a little bit more depth out there. He is an athletic kid that learns well and he loves football and that is an important thing and he is getting better with each and every practice."
7. On cornerback Ahmari Harvey...
"He has matured a lot and he had a great offseason. I mean a great offseason. He worked his butt off in the weight room, conditioning and I think he is faster than he was last year, which is great and you don't always see that when someone gets into college so he has gotten much faster and has been a pleasant surprise and really consistent, which is what you are looking for out there and I am proud of him and proud of the way that he has progressed and matured at this level."
8. On the freshmen...
"The best players are going to play. I don't care if you are first-year or second-year but they are out there and they are learning to be college football players and eventually learning to be like pros so there is still some maturation to grow and they have to accomplish and we will see where they are at the end of the season."
9. On Kenan Johnson and Kenyatta Watson and what they can do to cement a spot...
"Consistency is what it is. I am looking for consistent guys that can get the call and play the correct call and play the right technique and be productive at that position and that is about it. I don't ask much, I just ask that you be consistent and that is about it."
