Georgia Tech Football Midseason Report Card: Offensive Line
The offensive line for Georgia Tech is miles better than it was a year ago.
If you look at the PFF (Pro Football Focus) grades for the offensive line last year and compare them to this year, it is a night and day difference. Last season, PFF had Georgia Tech's pass blocking grading out at 42.8 (which is terrible) and the run blocking at 50.8. This season, Georgia Tech's pass-blocking grade is 67.4 and the run-blocking grade is 63.8. Again, the improvements have not been enough to make the Yellow Jackets an elite line, but it is clearly better year-over-year.
Coming into the year, Georgia Tech brought back all of their starters, but they have had some new guys emerge but for different reasons.
True freshman Ethan Mackenny came in to replace Corey Robinson after the first couple of drives against Louisville and he has not looked back. He has started every game since and while there have been ups and downs, he has performed well for a true freshman offensive lineman. Mackenny was named to the On3 Sports True Freshmen All-American team. On PFF (Pro Football Focus), Mackenny carries a 58.0 grade, with a 54.4 pass-blocking grade, and a 59.3 run-blocking grade.
Joe Fusile has started every game at left guard and he is currently the highest-graded Georgia Tech offensive player on PFF. Fusile has a 75.6 overall grade, with a 76.0 pass-blocking grade, and a 75.2 grade in run-blocking. He has seen a big jump in improvement over last year and is one of the leaders up front for Georgia Tech.
Fusile is not the only one that has seen a big jump in improvement. It has been great to see center Weston Franklin play well this season and he has started every game at center. Franklin has a 70.0 grade on PFF, with a high mark on pass blocking of 78.9 and a run blocking grade of 65.6. If Franklin can improve the run-blocking numbers, he could be one of the better centers in the ACC.
Princeton transfer Connor Scaglione has started the past five games at right guard after Jordan Williams started the year at the position. Scaglione has a 59.1 grade on PFF, with a 61.8 grade on pass blocking and a 57.5 on run blocking. It is possible that Williams takes over again at right guard, but Scaglione has been just slightly above average.
After starting the year at right guard, Williams went back to right tackle until he was injured in the victory over Wake Forest. He has played well when he is in and holds a 66.7 grade in PFF, with a 72.8 mark in pass blocking and 61.5 in run blocking. Jakiah Leftwich has been starting in Williams place and has been ok. He holds a 54.2 grade in PFF, with a 57.9 in pass blocking and a 52.6 in run blocking.
There is no doubt this unit is much better than a year ago when they were one of the worst in the country. Fusile and Franklin have played really well and Mackenny has shown a lot of promise as a true freshman. When Williams comes back, this group should keep improving.
