Could Georgia Tech have the ACC's best offense in 2024?

Georgia Tech had one of the best offenses in the ACC last season, including the top rushing offense. The good news for the Yellow Jackets is that they are bringing back the majority of starters on that side of the ball, with right guard Connor Scaglione and wide receiver Dominick Blaylock as the lone departures.

This means that Georgia Tech will have one of the highest-returning production rates on offense next season, but where exactly does Georgia Tech rank?

ESPN's Bill Connelly measures returning production each offseason and you can see which teams are having to replace a lot of production and which teams that are bringing a lot back. Here is what Connelly says about how he calculates returning production:

"For a few years now, I've been attempting to expand how we measure returning production. The formula I have created shifts with each new year of data and has had to shift a ton with the rising number of transfers. But the gist remains the same: High or low returning production percentages correlate well with improvement and regression. They might not guarantee a good or bad team, but they can still tell us a lot."

Georgia Tech ranks 7th in returning production for offense, behind Virginia Tech, Iowa State, West Virginia, USF, Virginia, and Old Dominion.

For overall returning production, Georgia Tech ranks 46th in the country. The ranking being there is due to the Yellow Jackets being only 105th in returning defensive production.

The No. 46 ranking puts them at 10th in the ACC in returning production. Virginia Tech, Virginia, Syracuse, Cal, Wake Forest, Stanford, Boston College, Louisville, and Miami rank ahead of Georgia Tech.

When looking at returning production, I think it is important to see how good each team was on the side of the ball where they are either returning a lot of production or losing a lot of production. I don't think it is a huge issue that Georgia Tech is 105th in returning production on defense because they had one of the worst defenses in the country last season. I do think it is a big deal they are 7th in returning production on offense because they had a good offense last season.

Haynes King is one of only two players in the nation with at least 2,700 passing yards, 600 rushing yards, 25 touchdown passes, and five touchdown runs this season (joining LSU’s Jayden Daniels), and one of only six ACC players to achieve those numbers in a regular season since 2000. He led the ACC in touchdown passes and was fourth in passing yards.

Jamal Haynes changed over from the wide receiver position and is less than 70 yards away from being a 1,000-yard rusher. There are a lot of unexpected angles from this season of Georgia Tech football, but Haynes emerging as one of the best running backs in the ACC is near the top. Haynes finished fifth in the ACC in rushing yards and helped spearhead a rushing attack that finished first in the ACC.

Eric Singleton Jr. leads all freshmen (true or redshirt) nationally with 64.2 receiving yards per game and ranks second among true freshmen nationally with six touchdown receptions. His 706 receiving yards and six touchdown catches both rank among the top 10 overall in the ACC, while his six TD receptions are just one shy of the Georgia Tech freshman record of seven, held by Calvin Johnson (2004) and Ahmarean Brown (2019).

Malik Rutherford was the second-leading receiver on Georgia Tech. He caught 44 passes for 462 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 10. 5 yards per catch. His biggest performance came in Georgia Tech's big win over North Carolina. Rutherford caught six passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns.

Christian Leary was the fourth-leading receiver for Georgia Tech this season, catching 25 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns, while also returning kickoffs.

Ethan Mackenny, Joe Fusile, Weston Franklin, and Jordan Williams all return on the offensive line next season.
