Georgia Tech Softball Splits Doubleheader With ACC Foe Virginia
In the first game of the doubleheader with ACC foe Virginia, Georgia Tech Softball got another win over the Cavaliers and that clinched the series. The Yellow Jackets have been playing well lately and looked to clinch the series after getting a victory over the Cavaliers last night.
Chandler Dennis got the start in game one.
Both teams went through a scoreless first inning, but UVA struck first in the second. After a couple of groundouts, Kailyn Jones singled and then that was followed by a triple that scored the first run of the game. It was the only run they put up that inning, but UVA led 1-0.
Jin Sileo reached on an error to start the third inning and then she stole second to set up the Yellow Jackets' offense in a good position, but they were unable to capitalize on that. Dennis had another shutdown inning and we went to the 4th with UVA leading 1-0.
Tech had an unproductive 1-2-3 inning in the fourth and despite having a runner in scoring position, the Cavs could not add to their lead. Both offenses were struggling, but Techs was going to break out of their slump soon.
After a scoreless 5th inning for both teams, the Yellow Jackets bats got to work. Emma Kauf singled to get things started and then Sara Beth Allen walked to give them two runners on. Mallorie Black singled to load the bases and then Abby Hughes hit a 2-RBI single to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 lead. Hughes got to second on a bad throw and then Jayden Gailey hit a 2-RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1 heading to the bottom of the 6th.
Blake Neleman took over for Dennis and despite giving up a solo home run, she pitched through the sixth inning to get to the final inning.
After Grace Connelly singled, Allen hit an RBI double to extend the lead to 5-2. Neleman cruised through the bottom of the 7th and that gave the Yellow Jackets a win in game one.
Dennis gave up four hits and struck out three batters in five innings pitched.
The second game was not as fun as the first.
Tech's offense could only muster three hits and despite solid outings from Neleman, Kinsey Norton, and Dennis, they could not pull off the victory.
The Yellow Jackets are now 14-9 this season and have started 2-1 in the ACC. A non-conference matchup with Georgia Southern is next on the schedule and that will be Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.
