Zach Gourde on Gonzaga’s shot selection: ‘These guys are too talented to settle'
The question for Gonzaga men's basketball this season hasn't been about the talent on the roster. Three players on the preseason All-WCC team with a former four-star recruit in the mix is quite a core to work with for one of college basketball's best coaches. But when assembling a team full of newcomers, there are going to be some growing pains and mental hurdles to get over, as seen in some of the Zags' nonconference losses.
Long stretches without a field goal were crushing against the likes of Purdue, Washington and UConn. Minor lapses defensively hurt in the San Diego State game. Most of the deficiencies on each end of the floor can be resolved with guys having more time on the court together to build continuity, something the Zags will have an opportunity to do throughout WCC action.
"They settle a lot, and these guys are too talented to settle," said former Gonzaga standout Zach Gourde (1998-2003). "I don’t see a team that takes bad shots, but I don’t see a team that takes a lot of really good shots. We take a lot of mediocre shots.
Gourde discussed what he's seen from Gonzaga on a new episode of Talking Zags with Dan Dickau and Adam Morrison.
