Despite a loss to Appalachian State over the weekend, James Madison have been one of the best teams in the Group of Five, if not the nation, in 2023. That's in large part because of their defense, allowing 18.91 points per game. The Dukes have the #20 scoring defense in all of FBS.

On Monday afternoon, the Broyles Award announced the list of 15 semifinalists up for the annual award presented to the top assistant coach in FBS. JMU defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Bryant Haines was included in the list. Haines is the only representative from the Group of Five listed as a semifinalist.

At 60.4 rushing yards allowed per game, the Dukes have the top rushing defense in the nation. The Dukes are also tied for second in FBS in rushing touchdowns allowed with nine. JMU is also tied for seventh in FBS in red zone trips allowed with 28.

The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee, and current college head coaches.

A selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semi-finalists, five finalists from the list of nominees, and an overall winner. Previous winners are not eligible to be nominated for the Broyles Award until the completion of three seasons.
