Deion Sanders Gives 'Shades' To His Players, After 'Shade' From Colorado State Coach
Deion Sanders has faced insults from other coaches, media, and naysayers since becoming head coach at Jackson State University. Many panned his first season as the Tigers head coach as a "Neon Deion Sideshow" or another "chance to draw attention to himself."
This week, Colorado State head coach Jay Norvell threw "shade" at Deion Sanders, saying, "When I talk to grown-ups, I take my hat and glasses off." Sanders responded on Thursday, saying, "Now it's personal."
Well, Coach Prime wouldn't stop there. Coach Prime handed out his shades to each Colorado Buffaloes football player this morning. It was another classic response from Sanders. "Don't realize that we won't only just kick their butts because it's personal. It's going to be business, but it's also going to be pleasure," Sanders told his players after they received his gift. He continued noting his partnership with Blenders eyeglass company, "They don't realize they just me with business."
WHEN WILL COACHES LEARN TO STOP POKING SANDERS?
Despite significant health challenges, Coach Prime won two straight SWAC Championships with HBCU football teams. When he accepted the University of Colorado job, coaches within the Power-5 ranks started to take shots at Coach Prime.
First, Oregon head coach Dan Lemming's comments about questioning if the Buffaloes are "winning anything" in the Pac-12 conference. Others have quipped and made snide remarks in the media before Colorado upset then-No. 17 TCU 45-42. Then, Sanders led his team over the Nebraska Cornhuskers 36-14.
Last season, fellow SWAC head coach Eddie Robinson Jr. of Alabama State violently refused to embrace Coach Prime following a loss and said, "He's not SWAC."
Coaches must stop poking the monster. It's about something other than what Sanders will unleash but how his players will respond in support of their coach on Saturday. The Colorado State game may have become personal, but it could become another cautionary tale for coaches to refrain from attacking Deion Sanders and his team.
