Hoosier Roundtable Podcast: Breaking Down Indiana Women's and Men's NCAA Tournament Seeds
It's the beginning of March Madness as the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament tips off for both the men and women this week. Hoosiers Now publisher Tom Brew and reporter Haley Jordan break down the Indiana teams' seeds and how that might fare for them in the Big Dance.
The women earned a one-seed for the first time in program history and second overall seed in the tournament. In the first round, the Hoosiers will face the winner of one of the First Four games between Tennessee Tech and Monmouth. Selected First Four through second round games will be hosted in Bloomington, Ind.
HALEY JORDAN: "Head coach Teri Moren in the press conference [Sunday] was very excited. Grace Berger, guard, and Mackenzie Holmes, forward, — they seemed very excited too about their matchup.
I literally think this is the best case scenario for Indiana because they have the luxury of not only playing the first and second rounds in Bloomington if they're to advance rounds, but they also get to watch the First Four game between Tennessee Tech and Monmouth, so they get a little bit of an edge although they don't know who they're going to play until after Thursday, March 16."
On the men's side, Indiana earned a four-seed and will play the 13-seeded Kent State Golden Flashes in the Midwest region hosted in Albany, N.Y.
TOM BREW: "It's great. I was really concerned after losing to Penn State in the semifinals for the Big Ten Tournament that Indiana might drop to a five-seed, which would mean another whole line of 12-seeds instead of 13-seeds that are really tough, and that's sort of the way it played out. Indiana was able to hold on to that No. 4 seed, which makes a big difference I think.
So they'll get Kent State here in the first game and that Mid-American Conference team is 28-6. They played a really good non-conference schedule. They were 15-3 in the MAC, one game behind Toledo. They're very good, but they're also very small, very guard-oriented team. They're going to have an enormous amount of trouble trying to deal with Trayce Jackson-Davis. They have no one near his size or talent level."
