Purdue Football Coach Ryan Walters Trolls Indiana, Curt Cignetti After Boilers Beat Hoosiers

Back in December, new Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti proclaimed, "Purdue sucks" in front of an Assembly Hall crowd. Purdue football coach Ryan Walters didn't forget, and used Cignetti's words against him after the Boilers' 87-66 win over the Hoosiers.

Purdue football coach Ryan Walters didn't forget what new Indiana football coach Curt Cignetti said on Dec. 1 inside Assembly Hall. On Tuesday night, the Boilermakers leader got the last laugh.

After Cignetti was named the new leader of the Hoosiers football program, he made an appearance at Assembly Hall during Indiana's basketball game against Maryland. With a microphone in hand, Cignetti got the crowd fired up by yelling, "Purdue sucks!"

Walters seems to have stored that message away. And on Tuesday night, he used Cignetti's words against him — much to the delight of many Purdue supporters — after the Boilermakers scorched the Hoosiers 87-66 on the hardwood in Bloomington.

"I guess Purdue doesn't suck #BoilerUp," Walters wrote on Twitter.

The Purdue-Indiana rivalry was already pretty intense. It seems that both Cignetti and Walters are adding a little flavor to it, as well.

Walters finished his first season as a head coach in 2023, posting a 4-8 record at Purdue. The Boilermakers capped the season with a 35-31 win over Indiana.

Cignetti came to Indiana via James Madison. Last season, he led the Dukes to an 11-1 record. He was 52-9 in his five seasons with the program.

Basketball season is in full swing. The Purdue-Indiana football game in 2024 is still 10 months away. But there might be even more intensity between the two teams next fall.
