Former Indiana Football WR Ty Fryfogle Cut by Kansas City Chiefs
Indiana wide receiver Ty Fryfogle has been waived by the Kansas City Chiefs, failing to make the 53-man roster for the defending Super Bowl champions.
Fryfogle played for coach Tom Allen and the Hoosiers from 2017-21, and finished his collegiate career with the sixth most receptions and receiving yards in Indiana football history. In total, the wideout from Lucedale, Miss., finished his five seasons in Bloomington with 158 receptions for 2,231 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Fryfogle was also named the 2020 Big Ten Receiver of the Year following a season where he caught 37 passes for 721 yards and seven touchdowns in just eight games. Along with Whop Philyor, he was one of superstar quarterback Michael Penix Jr.'s favorite targets during one of the best Indiana football seasons we've ever seen.
Fryfogle went undrafted in 2022, and signed with the Dallas Cowboys shortly thereafter as a UDFA. However, he was waived by Dallas in August following an undisclosed injury
The eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs then signed Fryfogle to a reserve/future contract in January of 2023. Charles Goldman of Yahoo Sports wrote an explanation on how reserve/future contracts work in the NFL back at the time of the signing:
"Players signed on (reserve/future) deals won’t count toward the team’s current active roster while they play in the postseason this year. When the 90-man offseason roster opens up at the beginning of the new league year in March, players signed to reserve/future contracts will officially be considered members of the team."
Thus, Fryfogle was with Kansas City during the offseason and NFL preseason action. However, unlike his former teammate Cam Jones, he was unable to make the Chiefs' roster. Coach Andy Reid and Co. instead decided to keep the following seven wide receivers — Kadarius Toney, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore, Justin Watson, Richie James, Rashee Rice and Justyn Ross.
Ross in particular was Fryfogle's main competition as a fellow undrafted wide receiver. However, it became clear early on that the former Clemson star was ahead in the battle, as he generated massive headlines during preseason play, and it became assume that any extra roster spot would go to him, and not Fryfogle.
From Sudfeld's torn ACL to several other Hoosiers that were waived as a result of the NFL's 4:00 p.m. ET Tuesday deadline for 53-man rosters, there's a lot of great Indiana football players who got bad news this week.
But for Fryfogle, this should be far from the end, as he had a stellar career in Bloomington, and has done enough to have at least been on the radar for NFL teams during the past two years.
