Football season has finally begun. And on a sun-splashed Friday in Bloomington, Indiana's football team got to work to prepare for an important season. Day 1 went well.

"I thought we got a lot of good work in,'' Indiana coach Tom Allen said. "A lot of guys got a lot of reps. It was a great first day and a great way to start.''

Allen was pleased with the energy on the first day. All in all, the day went well, with many more good days to come.

"What you watch for at the beginning, is sometimes you can get some bad habits from summer,'' Allen said. "The hope was with all these leaders, was that it would be better. It was a lot crisper. I thought our older guys brought in a lot of good habits from the summer.''

The biggest storyline of the fall is the quarterback battle between incumbent Peyton Ramsey, Michael Penix Jr., and Jake Tuttle. All three got plenty of reps.

"We did that by design, where all three guys got work with the ones, the twos and the threes,'' Allen said. "It really was nice, and these first few practices, we’ll see a lot of that. Once we get live, with pads, those numbers might change a little bit.''

The evaluation process started with the first snap, and that will continue every day. Each play matters, and they are closely watched on the field, filmed and reviewed again later. The QB competition is that close, and it won't take much to separate the field.

"Every day matters,'' Allen said. "We log every completion percentage, execution, mental mistakes. We’ll watch every single play and evaluate it.''
