Big Ten Roundup (July 3): Purdue Lands 4-Star Safety; Michigan State Gets QB Hasselbeck
Purdue, Michigan State, and Ohio State all made big splashes on the football recruiting trail over the past week.
The Boilermakers are capitalizing on their 2022 Big Ten Championship Game appearance with some major class of 2024 commits, while the Spartans looks to bounce back from a 5-7 campaign, and the Buckeyes keeps on bringing in five-star recruits, like they always do.
Additionally, Purdue's most-anticipated basketball recruit for the upcoming season just played in some big games on the FIBA international stage.
Here's everything you need to know in today's Big Ten Roundup:
Purdue Gets Top Commit In 2024 Class
Ryan Walters is wasting no time leaving his mark on the Purdue football program just months into his tenure as head coach.
Last Wednesday, the Boilermakers landed Koy Beasley, a four-star safety from Cincinnati in the class of 2024. Beasley had 20 Division-I offers in total, per 247 Sports, and Purdue beat out several Big Ten rivals in Wisconsin, Rutgers, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Michigan State for his commitment.
Beasley also had offers from prominent SEC schools in Georgia, Arkansas, and Texas A&M.
Beasley is Purdue's highest ranked commit of the 2024 class, and the Boilermakers' class currently ranks 18th overall on 247's standings, and 22nd overall in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.
Walters is stepping into big shoes following the departure of Jeff Brohm to Louisville, but the former Illinois defensive coordinator turned Purdue coach appears to be acquitting himself well on the recruiting trail.
Matt Hasselbeck's Son Commits to Michigan State
Following the regression and subsequent departure of quarterback Payton Thorne, Mel Tucker needed some new signal-calling talent in East Lansing. The Spartans might have found just that in the commitment of three-star quarterback Henry Hasselbeck — son of 3-time NFL Pro Bowl quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.
The younger Hasselbeck has starred at Xaverian Brothers High School in Massachusetts and also had offers from Pittsburgh, Boston College, and Arizona, according to 247.
5-Star Prospect Commits to Ohio State
Surprise, surprise — Ohio State is running away with one of the best 2024 recruiting classes in the country.
Despite heavy reports that five-star defensive lineman Justin Scott would commit to Miami or Notre Dame this past week, On3's Hayes Fawcett broke the news that the Chicago native was instead heading to Ohio State to play for defensive line coach Larry Johnson and the Buckeyes.
With the commitment of Scott, the Buckeyes now have the No. 2 overall ranked 2024 recruiting class per 247, trailing only the defending national champions in Georgia.
Purdue's Myles Colvin at FIBA U19
It was an incredibly disappointing FIBA World Cup for the American U19 team, as their team failed to make the podium and finished fourth overall after a loss to Turkey.
Incoming Purdue freshman Myles Colvin — a four-star recruit out of Indianapolis — traveled to Hungary with the national team. He averaged just over 10 minutes per game and scored 5.7 points per game in six games for the U.S. while shooting 37.5 percent from three-point range and scoring a personal best of 10 points against Japan in the quarterfinal match.
