Yeagley: Joey Maher Will Transfer, Younger Brother Josh Will Be With Team in the Fall
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana men’s soccer head coach Todd Yeagley confirmed on WGCL radio Friday evening that longtime Hoosier and former captain Joey Maher will transfer from Indiana. Yeagley said Maher's younger brother, Josh, is enrolled in classes and rehabbing at IU and will be with the team in the fall.
Joey was taken with the No. 30 pick in this year’s MLS SuperDraft by Toronto FC and was seen in photos at preseason camp. On Jan. 26, it was reported that Joey entered his name in the transfer portal. Yeagley compared Joey Maher’s decision to that of A.J. Palazzolo's, who transferred in 2021 after four years with Indiana, and had “good closure.”
Based on Yeagley’s tone, it sounded like both the family and program were on board. Yeagley also mentioned graduate school plans. Pivoting to Josh, Yeagley said he graduated early and after talks with his family, the program thought it would be best for him to get minutes with St. Louis City 2 at the MLS Next Pro level — and show up one year later in fall 2024. He played 14 matches in 2023.
Josh has reclassified, and Yeagley said he enrolled in classes in January, because he got hurt and "can’t play for a couple months." He is rehabbing, going to school full-time, and will join the group this fall. Josh is listed as another defender, like his two older brothers.
