Four of college basketball's top five teams lost this week, what does it mean for Kentucky?

John Calipari and the Wildcats still need to take care of business against Texas A&M on Saturday, but the path to a number one seed is opening up.

On Tuesday evening the top two ranked teams in the country, Purdue and Houston, each fell to unranked opponents on the road in Nebraska and Iowa State, respectively. It was just the eighth time the top two teams both fell to unranked teams on the same day, but it was just the beginning of what has been a wild week of college basketball.

Roughly 24 hours later, and about three minutes apart from each other, the No. 3 ranked team and No. 5 ranked team, Kansas and Tennessee, fell to unranked teams on the road as well in Central Florida and Mississippi State, respectively.

No. 4 UConn got a scare from unranked Xavier, who turned a 14 point deficit into six before ultimately falling to the Huskies on Wednesday.

Regardless, four of the top five teams all losing to unranked opponents is unquestionably a good thing for Kentucky, especially when one of those teams is Tennessee, their strongest competition for the top spot in the SEC.

Kentucky, who is currently No. 6 in the polls, should move into the top five if they are able to take care of business on Saturday afternoon in College Station against the Aggies of Texas A&M.

Of course, ranked teams have struggled this week against unranked opponents, and while A&M has not met expectations this season they are a dangerous team with a top 30 offense in the country, per KenPom, led by sophomore guard Wade Taylor IV.

Under Calipari there is no chance the Wildcats will overlook this A&M squad, but the knowledge that a win likely puts them in the conversation for a top three ranking (depending how those other teams do on Saturday) is certainly going to be on the mind of Big Blue Nation this weekend.
