Florida head coach praised one of Kentucky's seven-footers
Kentucky split with the Florida Gators on the season as they came into Rupp Arena and beat the Wildcats in overtime 94-91.
It was another game where Kentucky was outplayed in overtime, just like we saw when the Wildcats lost to the Texas A&M Aggies. This Kentucky team needs to find a way to close better in regulation and overtime if they want to make a deep run in March.
One Wildcat who had a big game was Ugonna Onyenso. He had 13 points to go with 16 rebounds and eight blocks. Onyenso has clearly taken over as Kentucky's best seven-footer as he has played out of his mind these last two games. He is still coming back from the injury and will have a lot left in the tank down the stretch of the season.
Florida's head coach Todd Golden had this to say about Onyenso after the game, “He’s definitely coming on, you know, the first time we played him, I think he played under 10 minutes, but you can tell by the way they’ve been playing, and how he’s been playing that he’s become more of a focal point in the front court, he was 4-11 from the field I can live with that, he did a great job making his free throws, I know he was 45% coming into the game if I remember correctly. He dominated us on the glass, and I think he is providing Kentucky with some toughness and some physicality, and rim protection with eight blocks; I didn’t realize that. He had a heck of a game man. Goodness gracious, he’s playing really well, and you can tell that he is becoming more confident out there as well."
After this game, Onyenso is averaging 4.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game. Onyenso will lead college basketball in blocked shots if he can keep this pace up.
