John Calipari gives alarming update on Tre Mitchell's injury
Kentucky was at full strength for the first time all season against Ole Miss, but it didn't last long.
Ole Miss was in town to take on the Kentucky Wildcats, who were looking to snap a three-game losing streak in Rupp Arena. Kentucky was able to snap the streak, taking down Ole Miss 75-63 behind a balanced offensive attack. The Wildcats had four players score in double-figures, but no one went off. This is what makes Kentucky such a dangerous basketball team.
Tre Mitchell returned from his two-game absence with a back injury against Ole Miss but was only able to play 21 minutes before having to leave with a shoulder injury. After picking up his third foul, Mitchell went to the bench, grabbing his shoulder. He was on the bench for less than a minute before heading back to the locker room and never made his way back out.
Coach John Calipari had this to say about Mitchell's injury post-game: "Went to get x-rays, I don't know."
While Coach Calipari clearly doesn't know much yet, it is alarming to hear that Mitchell is going for X-rays. Watching him go to the bench, he was in a ton of pain, so it will be interesting to hear a timeline on Mitchell the next time we hear from Coach Calipari.
Mitchell played for Ole Miss Coach Chris Beard during the 2021-22 season at Texas, and Beard had this to say about him, "I think Tre Mitchell is one of the best players in college basketball. In my opinion, he’s not a stat sheet guy; there's no denying it's the poise and composure he gives this young, really talented team."
This shows you just how valuable Mitchell is to this freshman-heavy Kentucky team. Hopefully, this injury isn't serious, and Mitchell is able to give it a go against Auburn on Saturday.
