Thoughts from watching Kentucky commit Travis Perry play in the WGM Holiday Classic

Travis Perry will be a perfect fit for John Calipari's system.

Travis Perry is currently in Lexington, playing in the WGM Holiday Classic with his high school, Lyon County. I was able to watch Perry play live as Lyon County took on DeSales.

In this game, you could say for Perry's standards, he didn't have his best game, scoring 24 points while going 9-20 from the field and 4-10 from three. He did add seven assists, three steals, and two rebounds to the stat line, but from a scoring standpoint, this wasn't his best game, and Perry said that after the game.

What stood out to me about Perry's game is how he is always moving without the basketball. He plays the two for Lyon County, so he isn't the primary ball handler, so the team has to find ways to get him open looks.

A lot of these open looks come from Perry constantly running around the floor and trying to get open shots off of the screen or just flat-out losing his defender with his hustle.

This is what it takes to score at the college level, and seeing Perry do that shows you how good he will be in a Kentucky uniform. Despite playing all 32 minutes in this game, Perry was always running and trying to find an open shot.

The other part of Perry's game that stood out was how he always makes the correct decision when handling the basketball. He was getting double and even triple-teamed during this game, but he knew if all of these players were on him, he had teammates open. He was able to find an open shooter or cutter, which led to the seven assists in this ball game.

The last thing I loved to see was how, when the game got tight late, Perry took over. With about four minutes left in the matchup with DeSales they cut the Lyon County lead to four points, so Perry went on a 5-0 scoring run of his own, stretching the lead to an eventual 82-69 win for Lyon County.

After watching the all-time Kentucky high school basketball leading scorer in person for the first time, it was clear he will be special for John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats.
