Historical Miami Women's Hoops Tournament Run Ends Against LSU

Hurricanes defense does it, but offense not enough to make first Final Four run.

What a dance it was.

After a valiant, underdog effort throughout March Madness, the University of Miami women's basketball team saw its 2022-23 season come to a close in the Elite 8 on Sunday evening by falling to No. 3 seed LSU.

The 54-42 final mark was indicative of a strong defensive effort by both programs, where a three-point field goal wasn't made until LSU ended the streak in the fourth quarter. With Miami trailing for most of the game, LSU pulled away late to make the game appear more one-sided than it was.

No. 9 seed Miami was strong early, especially on defense, holding All-American Angel Reese without a field goal in the first half.

Points were simply hard to come by, with both teams shooting less than 31 percent from the field, but there were bright spots in trailing effort for the Canes.

In the first half,  Jasmyne Roberts kept UM afloat offensively, scoring 16 of her 22 points. Even in more than doubling her season average (8.9 points per game), it wasn't enough as no other Hurricane managed double figures on this night.

Outside of Roberts, Miami shot just 8 for 37 (21.6 percent) against the Tigers. Team leader and captain Destiny Harden, who hit the game-winner against top-seeded Indiana just six days prior, seemingly had an eye contact issue for most of the night.

Miami wraps its historic campaign with a 22-13 record under Katie Meier, the winningest coach in program history.

The run through the Elite 8 run was of course the deepest the Hurricanes have danced into March Madness in the NCAA Tournament, besting its Sweet Sixteen run back in 1992.
