Miami Gets Revenge, Beats The Aggies 48-33
After a tough loss last season at College Station, Miami came out a proved that last year's game was no indication of where they stand today.
Last year, Tyler Van Dyke said Miami "would've quit" when they were down early. Today, the Hurricanes were far from that mentality.
Led by the arm of Van Dyke who threw for 374 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, Miami upsets the 23rd ranked Texas A&M Aggies and moves to 2-0 on the season.
Miami's main three receivers were big tonight in contributing to the win. Xavier Restrepo went for 126 yards in large part to some big gains, as he averaged 21 yards per catch. Jacolby George found the endzone three times and had the game sealing score. Colbie Young went for 75 yards and a score, but only good enough for the third best statline.
After putting up five passing touchdowns for the Aggies last week against New Mexico, Conner Weigman had just two passing touchdown on the day and threw two interceptions to go with.
Amari Daniels was the main threat for Texas A&M throughout the game, as he put up 82 scrimmage yards for the Aggies and a score. The receivers were quiet though, but Evan Stewart came on strong late and racked up 142 yards.
On the defensive end, it was Kamren Kinchens who was the difference maker for the Hurricanes. His interception on Weigman started it off, and had the fumble recovery from the Jaden Davis hit at the end of the third quarter.
Kinchens was carted off the field at the end of the fourth, and was airlifted to Ryder Trauma for further observations. Head coach Mario Cristobal stated "everything seems to be relatively normal" during the post game presser.
James Williams was flying all-around the field this game, leading the team with nine tackles playing in the box.
Branson Deen and Akheem Mesidor were held out of the second half with injuries, which forced Miami to trust their young depth to finish out the game.
While they didn't have a sack, Miami was getting after Weigman with QB hits racking up four for the game.
Regarding the run game, it was far from what last week was against Miami (OH) as the Hurricanes had just 77 yards on 3.2 YPC this evening. However, Miami stuck with it throughout the game and had all four backs involved despite an injury to Mark Fletcher.
There was still plenty of mistakes for the Hurricanes, as both Mauigoa brothers racked up two penalties. Additionally, special teams saw a muffed punt, blocked punt and missed kick. However, all of it was outshined by Brashard Smith's 98 yard kickoff return.
Now 2-0, Miami will face the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on Thursday at 7:30 PM on ACC Network with a chance to move their way up the rankings.
