Demetrius Freeney Adds to Miami's 2023 Recruiting Class

Hurricanes signing a much needed cornerback recruit

The timing for adding cornerback Demetrius Freeney to Miami’s 2023 recruiting class could not have been better.

After Miami lost Antoine Jackson after he signed with Miami, plus Cormani McClain picking Colorado at the last minute instead of the Canes, there were still some lingering questions about cornerback depth heading into the 2023 season.

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal even snagged former Iowa cornerback Terry Roberts out of the Transfer Portal. He wasn’t at Miami long, however, and reentered the Transfer Portal and will attend Michigan State instead.

That’s why the addition of Freeney, a prospect with three years of eligibility after playing one season at the College of San Mateo in California, was huge for the Canes.

He’s listed at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds. More importantly, his freshman season film for San Mateo showcased Freeney making plays down the field and near the line of scrimmage.

He’s shown to be quite capable as a press cornerback; Freeney also played press-bail coverage, as well as traditional zone.

With his natural traits, Freeney could play field cornerback or boundary and be just fine either way.

Seeing him move with a natural gate in the open field also made it easy to see why schools like the Canes, as well as Oklahoma, Louisville, Colorado, Houston, Nevada, California and Fresno State all wanted him on their respective rosters.

Look for Freeney to come in and compete for playing time for the Canes.
