Miami Hurricanes Fans Should Expect The Unexpected When Mario Cristobal Names His New OC

After seeing Mario Cristobal hire defensive coordinator Lance Guidry completely out of left field, fans should expect a similar outcome from the offensive coordinator search.

I am finished guessing who the next Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator will be.

After seeing Mario Cristobal hire defensive coordinator Lance Guidry - a name no one was mentioning on any website, newspaper or message board - we can now expect the unexpected on offense as well.

On a new episode of Locked On Canes, I explained why the next offensive coordinator will likely not be someone we've written about or discussed:

The OC candidates with the most smoke behind their names have been Toledo head coach Jason Candle and former Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks coach Doug Nussmeier.

On Candle, I've been told repeatedly that Cristobal really likes him. I suspect the job could be his if he wants it. But does he want it? He passed on the same job a year ago to remain head coach of the Rockets. This time around, David Lake from Inside The U has reported that Toledo sources feel Candle would be more likely to take the Notre Dame OC job than Miami's if he were to depart.

On Nussmeier, I have my doubts that he wants to return to the college ranks. Despite not being retained in Dallas, he's come up as a candidate for other NFL jobs. The buzz behind his name has seemingly cooled in Miami circles in recent days.

Beyond those two, the name Scott Frost has come up among Miami fans but I have been told he likely is not in consideration

Cristobal is keeping his inner circle very tight on these staff decisions. It's my understanding that he is not conducting interviews on campus (thus avoiding eye-witnesses) and is likely only involving agents in the communications.

There were zero leaks about Guidry until he accepted the job. Let's just hope whoever accepts the OC position is someone innovative, energetic, willing to collaborate with others, and willing to stay for at least three years. Continuity is important. Miami cannot afford to get this hire wrong.
