The Miami Hurricanes gained a speedster from Broward County to help carry on the running back tradition the Canes possess.

Chris Wheatley-Humphrey

Size

: 6 feet, 175 pounds

Position

: Running Back

High School

: Dania Beach (Fla.) South Broward

Recruitment: Chris Wheatley-Humphrey chose Miami over UCF, Florida State, Ole Miss, Louisville, Maryland, Georgia Tech, and others. Wheatley-Humphrey made his public announcement to attend Miami on April 17, 2023.

Strengths: Elite speed has been Wheatley-Humphrey’s most well-known asset, and he’s certainly been electric. Vision might have been his best skill to date, however. Even in tight quarters, Wheatley-Humphrey’s vision allows him to make cuts at the last moment that left defenders behind him.

During the last year, he’s also added more strength. That allowed Wheatley-Humphrey the ability to break far more tackles. All combined, he ran for 2,076 yards during his senior season.

As a receiver out of the backfield – or a player lined up in the slot – Wheatley-Humphrey displayed his talents as well. Wheatley-Humphrey’s speed and athleticism have undoubtedly caught the attention of the Miami special teams coaches, too.

From the 2024 Miami Commitments and Evaluations page, here’s what AllHurricanes wrote about Wheatley-Humphrey as a receiving threat:

Looking to the future, with Wheatley-Humphrey playing in Miami's air raid offense, he will also be a consistent matchup nightmare. Linebackers and defensive backs alike will struggle to keep up with him in the open field when he goes to the slot or runs a route out of the backfield.

You can read a junior season Wheatley-Humphrey evaluation here to compare with what’s discussed within this article.

Area to improve: A lean frame has helped Wheatley-Humphrey glide by defenders, but he’s going to need added weight to be able to pass protect versus edge rushers and blitzing linebackers.
