Tyler Van Dyke: What's Happened and What's Next
University of Miami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke made headlines this week with the potential of a transfer to Alabama.
He has since settled on Miami and should be considered the starting quarterback next year. Van Dyke is an incredibly interesting story, and to take a look where it began in high school where the Glasonbury, CT native attended Suffield Academy in Connecticut.
After great success, he found himself ranked number 1 or 2 for recruits in his home state. After a redshirt year the 4-star recruit’s development was strong.
Additionally, an unfortunate injury to D’Eriq King was when a potential star was born in Van Dyke. He stepped in and had 6 straight 300-plus passing yard games, as well as 3 or more touchdown games.
With that incredible level of success as a redshirt freshman, Van Dyke won ACC Rookie of the Year and found himself getting first round draft buzz for 2023. Despite Van Dyke’s success the team struggled and coaching changes were made. Cristobal and Gattis step in as the new head coach and offensive coordinator, and Van Dyke’s production takes a major hit.
He battled injuries throughout the year with not only himself but his number one receiver Xavier Restrepo. For the 2023 season, Van Dyke will see his 3rd offensive coordinator in as many years in Shannon Dawson, who will be installing the air raid and putting the game on his shoulders.
There will be a ton of pressure on Van Dyke to perform this year, and to try and get himself back in the running for a high NFL Draft selection. Evaluators remain impressed by his frame, accuracy, arm talent, and sneaky athleticism. Now he needs to go out and perform this next season.
But, can Van Dyke make those critical plays that help lead The U back to being a top-notch team again? Sometimes those plays go beyond the passing yards and touchdown throws.
For Miami to be successful this fall, Van Dyke will need to be able to throw the football to the right players at the right time. Just as importantly, he needs to use his feet – when necessary – to pick up valuable first downs.
In the end, Van Dyke will have a chance to cement himself as the quarterback that helped Miami get back on track and ascend towards the upper echelon of the college football world. If he does that, the NFL riches will await him one year from now.
