Miami's Charlie Strong Departs Following Hire of DC Lance Guidry

After Not Being Considered For Defensive Coordinator, Strong Ends His Stint In Coral Gables

When Miami brought in Mario Cristobal from Oregon last year to help bring the University of Miami back to glory, he took no time assembling a staff full of star studded names. From high rankings coordinators to former head coaches, there was plenty of experience on the staff going into the 2022 season.

One of those big names was linebacker coach Charlie Strong, who at the time of his hiring had been serving as the Jacksonville Jaguars inside linebacker coach for the 2021 season. Strong brought his 38 years of coaching experience to Coral Gables, with head coaching experience at Louisville, Texas and USF, and three national title appearances.

However once Kevin Steele took the offer to rejoin Nick Saban's staff up in Tuscaloosa, many were assuming that Strong would be the predecessor at defensive coordinator.

In the end, Cristobal decided to steal Lance Guidry from Tulane to be Miami's next defensive coordinator. Recently named on Tuesday, news broke this morning that Strong would not be returning for the 2023 season. This can probably be attributed to the fact he was not considered for the defensive coordinator position, as Miami went out of house to fill the void.

For Strong, he will most definitely be a hot commodity for teams looking to hire an established coordinator/coach. Whether he takes a defensive coordinator job or joins as an analyst at a larger program, Strong won't spend much time on the open market. In fact, he's been linked to Alabama and head coach Nick Saban.

For Miami, it will be interesting to see how Guirdy and Cristobal look to fill the void. Two hot names to potential be promoted in house are Demarcus Van Dyke and Jason Taylor. But if Cristobal has showed us anything, there's always a trick up his sleeve.
