Tyler Van Dyke Will Remain a Hurricane
Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke will remain in Coral Gables to play for Miami, despite the rumors of him heading to play for Alabama.
The possibility of Van Dyke playing for Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide made sense. Bama’s Heisman winning and likely first overall NFL Draft pick Bryce Young was gone, and there’s no lock on the current roster to lead the Tide to the promised land for Saban and Bama fans this next season.
Van Dyke to Bama, why not? That especially made sense considering the following.
With the NCAA waiving the need to sit out a year when using the Transfer Portal, many players have headed to Tuscaloosa and other destinations to finish out their college football careers.
As for Van Dyke, last night the Miami football Twitter handle placed those rumors to rest via this not so subtle tweet:
That would be Miami’s version of the proverbial not so fast like ESPN college football analyst Lee Corso has utilized for years. A couple of notes on what this means for Miami, and then Alabama as well.
There were talking points about Van Dyke wanting some form of NIL compensation. Assuming that was true, it’s evidently behind him and Miami. Now onto the important issues of being the quarterback for Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes.
For the Canes, there’s a hope that the redshirt-junior signal caller can place the program back on solid ground; get the Canes to a good bowl game at least.
After a 5-7 campaign in which Miami lost Van Dyke not once but twice to injury, Mario Cristobal and the Canes certainly needed stability at quarterback. The veteran signal caller remaining in Coral Gables will also allow for something else to happen.
Jacurri Brown and Emory Williams will have another year to learn and mature. Look, college football has never been easy. Quarterback play would also be at the top of the heap for the position that’s most often stressed with assignment-knowledge and an overall full understanding of the offensive system.
That extra year to learn from the sidelines for each of Brown and Williams will come in handy come the spring of 2024 when Van Dyke has likely headed to the NFL and his understudies can battle it out for the starting Hurricanes quarterback job. As for Bama, there’s more uncertainty than Miami.
There simply are not many options in the Transfer Portal for Saban and the Tide right now. From the current Alabama roster, they could go with one or both of Jalen Milroe or Ty Simpson. Like Miami’s younger quarterbacks, neither has significant experience, however.
It will be interesting to see what, if anything, Saban does moving forward. The only obvious guess right now is what Van Dyke will not be his quarterback.
