Wheatley-Humphrey Talks About His Playing Style, Miami Hurricanes
One of Miami’s fastest 2024 commitments, Chris Wheatley-Humphrey made his pledge to the Hurricanes on April 17.
With spring practice now underway in South Florida, it was time to go see him live.
The speedy running back from Dania Beach (Fla.) South Broward was participating in spring practice on Monday, and All Hurricanes was there to watch him perform. He offered feedback regarding his own play, as well as topics relating to becoming a Hurricane.
A modest young man, Wheatley-Humphrey was asked point blank what his best attribute as a football player would be.
“I’m kind of elusive,” he stated after a few moments of thought. “Yeah, I’m Kind of elusive but I’m not there yet (for where I want to be).”
In similar fashion, Wheatley-Humphrey discussed the area he needs to improve upon the most.
“Patience. Like, everybody will be moving too slow (for how I want to hit the hole), and I’ll try to force things a little bit. So, I need to work on patience.”
Despite being 6-foot and 175 pounds, Wheatley-Humphrey likes to play physical football between the tackles. His junior film was a great example of that.
When asked about his favorite play, the answer was not a surprise.
“Not going to lie, it’s inside power.”
Shifting to the Hurricanes, Wheatley-Humphrey has high respect for his future head coach Mario Cristobal.
“He’s genuine; he’s real. I feel like, when I go there I’m going to do great things under him. I trust him.”
Wheatley-Humphrey has also built a relationship with running backs coach Tim Harris.
“When I go to practice, they’re working hard. He’s pushing his players. I’m going to need that. He’s a great coach.”
As for coming into The U as a freshman, Wheatley-Humphrey was asked about how he could most likely help the program immediately.
“Probably going to be a role as a third down back.”
Finally, Wheatley-Humphrey commented about the University of Miami campus itself.
“It’s beautiful, and they’re still building on it. So when I get there, some construction will be done and they’ll still be building on it. Everything will be great.”
