Daylen Russell Signs With Miami Hurricanes

Christopher Columbus defensive lineman Daylen Russell inks with the Miami Hurricanes
In this story:

If there's a program that any Miami Hurricanes fan can be assured that Mario Cristobal and the Canes will recruit year after year, it's Miami (Fla.) Christopher Columbus. That's where the latest Miami signee comes from, and it's also Cristobal's high school alma mater.

Daylen Russell

Size: 6-foot-3, 275 pounds

Position: Defensive Tackle

High School: Miami (Fla.) Christopher Columbus

Recruitment: UCF, Florida State, Louisville, Nebraska, and West Virginia are some of the schools that Miami defeated for Russell. Committed on May 27, Russell is a player that Cristobal and his staff did not need to worry about moving on to another program.

Strengths: While Russell has the physical size to play major college football, the most important thing to know would be how he consistently finds a great path to the ball carrier. Whether a sprint-out pass and Russell needs to contain the edge, a guard-tackle trap and he needs to hold the point of attack, or tracking a play from the backside, Russell makes plays.

His frame is well suited to being a future 3-technique, i.e. defensive tackle. He's been playing on the edge for Columbus, however, with his quickness and lateral mobility being prime reasons schools like Miami went after him.

Area to Improve: More than improvement, learning how to use his size as an interior defensive lineman. Russell is a young man who added a lot of size and strength during the last year. He did not play a lot of interior defensive line, however. That's about to change upon his arrival at Miami.

From the 2024 Miami Commitments and Evaluations page, here’s what AllHurricanes wrote about Russell:

An all-around front seven defender who has played standing up as a rush linebacker, as well as being in a three-point stance within both three-man and four-man lines. Russell's versatility will provide the Hurricanes with many options to pair him with other recent recruits like Rueben Bain and Jayden Wayne from the 2023 recruiting class, among others.

Keeping Russell at home is a prime starting point for the 2024 Miami recruiting class and it's also a blueprint for future Canes' recruiting efforts.
