Michigan's JJ McCarthy Has Highest Winning Percentage Of Any QB In The Last 10 Seasons
When Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy committed to Michigan back in 2019, Wolverine fans began counting down the days until the five-star prospect would assume the QB1 spot in Ann Arbor.
It didn't take long.
McCarthy got his first start during his sophomore year in week two of the 2022 season and he never looked back. Since that time, McCarthy has an overall record of 22-1 as a starter, giving him a .957 winning percentage in that role. He's been so good that his winning percentage is the highest of any quarterback over the last 10 seasons with a minimum of 20 starts, putting him at the top of a very impressive list.
Given how much of a winner McCarthy is, it's fitting that he'll be the starting quarterback when Michigan likely becomes the first program in College Football history to reach 1,000 wins this weekend.
As previously noted, McCarthy is also chasing Michigan Football history as he continues to move up the all-time rankings
McCarthy is in his second year as the starting quarterback at the University of Michigan, but he's already placed himself among some of the best to ever play the position in Ann Arbor. He's currently No. 9 in career completions (405), No. 9 in career passing yards (5,429), and tied for No. 6 in career passing touchdowns (45). McCarthy is also tied at No. 6 in single-season passing touchdowns (22, 2022) and still has a shot to break the single season record of 25 held by Elvis Grbac and Chad Henne. He currently sits at 18 touchdown passes with at least three games remaining in the 2023 season.
Regardless of how this 2023 season ultimately plays out, there's no doubt that head coach Jim Harbaugh was correct in his recent assessment of where JJ McCarthy ranks all-time among Michigan quarterbacks.
"Just for two seconds, I just ask you people that watch football...watch a lot of football, are experts and evaluators of quarterback play," Harbaugh said. "Two seconds, just enjoy the ability of JJ McCarthy and the talent that he is as a passer, as a runner, as a leader. It doesn't come along every day, every year, every decade - you know, ever. I think he's truly the best college Michigan quarterback that we've ever seen."
