BREAKING: Jonathan Smith, Michigan State land 4th commitment of 2024 class
National Signing Day is approaching fast, as most high school seniors from across the country to sign their letters of intent on Wednesday, Dec. 20.
While Michigan State football's 2024 recruiting class remains on the small side, head coach Jonathan Smith and his coaching staff have started to add pieces to those left behind by the previous regime. On Sunday evening, the Spartans received their fourth verbal commitment this week when three-star Tampa (Fla.) Gaither athlete Andrew Brinson IV announced his pledge to the Green and White via social media.
Having played on both sides of the ball in high school, Brinson is being recruited to play defensive back at Michigan State. The Spartans' primary recruiter for the 6-foot, 175-pounder has been secondary coach Blue Adams, whom Smith brought with him to East Lansing. Brinson is the first defensive prospect MSU has landed since it hired Smith last month.
According to 247Sports composite rankings, Brinson is considered the No. 1015 overall player, No. 91 athlete and No. 137 player from the state of Florida in the 2024 class. He chose Michigan State over offers from UCF, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Utah, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas and others.
Over the past week, Michigan State has landed previous commitments from three-star running backs Mahki Frazier and Brandon Tullis, and three-star tight end Wyatt Hook, in addition to Brinson. All four of those players were previously committed to Oregon State prior to Smith taking the job at MSU. Brinson originally committed to the Beavers on June 17, but decommitted on November 25 — the same day Michigan State hired Smith.
Prior to this string of pledges, the Spartans' 2024 class had shrunk to just seven commitments and the class ranked in the 100s. With the addition of Brinson, MSU's class now ranks No. 69 in the country according to 247Sports' team rankings.
