BREAKING: 5-Star DT David Stone Announces College Commitment
Michigan State's top recruiting target in the 2024 cycle is off the board, as five-star Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy defensive tackle David Stone announced his commitment to Oklahoma on Saturday.
Stone chose the Sooners over the Spartans and fellow finalists Miami, Oregon, Texas A&M and Florida.
While the 6-foot-4, 270-pound mega-talent made several trips to East Lansing throughout his recruitment, including Stone's final official visit this past summer, Michigan State was not able to beat out the hometown Sooners and reel in what would have been the Spartans' biggest recruiting win of the Mel Tucker era.
Stone is considered the No. 6 overall player, No. 2 defensive lineman and No. 3 player from the state of Florida in the '24 class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings.
Michigan State had targeted Stone for a long time, with former defensive line coach Marco Coleman and pass rush specialist Brandon T. Jordan leading the charge for MSU throughout the 2022 season. Even with the departure of both of those assistant coaches, Michigan State remained in the battle for the Oklahoma native under new D-line coach Diron Reynolds.
The Spartans currently has 12 committed prospects in its 2024 class, which is ranked No. 52 in the country and No. 15 in the Big Ten. The class is headlined by four-star River Rouge (Mich.) wide receiver Nick Marsh and four-star Tampa (Fla.) Carrollwood Day running back Anthony Carrie. Michigan State will look to add to their class throughout the 2023 season before National Signing Day on Dec. 20.
