BREAKING: Michigan State Football Suffers 3rd Decommitment From 2024 Class

The Spartans lost another of its 2024 commitments in the wake of Saturday's loss at Rutgers...

Michigan State football has suffered its third decommitment from the 2024 recruiting class since former head coach Mel Tucker was fired.

On Sunday, in the wake of the Spartans' 27-24 loss at Rutgers, three-star Syracuse (N.Y.) Christian Brothers Academy defensive back Syair Torrence announced that he was reopening his recruitment after spending the last three and a half months committed to MSU.

Torrence cited the uncertainty surrounding Michigan State's football program as the reason he no longer felt comfortable staying committed to the Spartans. The high school senior said he's looking for a "stable, consistent football home."

"The current situation at Michigan State, surrounded by a lot of uncertainty, has been one I've gone back and forth about in previous weeks," Torrence wrote in a social media post. "After discussing with my parents and coaches, I think it's best that I consider all options for my future at the next level."

Torrence joins four-star Dayton (Ohio) Centerville safety Reggie Powers and three-star Tampa Bay (Fla.) Tech defensive back Camren Campbell as prospects who have decommitted from MSU's 2024 class since Tucker was fired. Interim head coach Harlon Barnett, who has coached safeties for the Spartans during the Tucker regime, was the primary recruiter for both Powers and Campbell. Cornerbacks coach Jim Salgado was Torrence's primary recruiter at MSU.

Previously committed to Syracuse, Torrence flipped to Michigan State back in late June and was Salgado's first win on the recruiting trail after joining the Spartans' staff. Torrence is considered the No. 974 overall prospect and No. 7 player from the state of New York in the 2024 class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. Torrence picked up an offer from in-state rival Michigan back on Aug. 1, and also has offers from Rutgers, Boston College and Pittsburgh, among others.

With the loss of Torrence, Michigan State is down to just 10 commitments in its 2024 recruiting class, which falls to No. 64 in the country and second-worst in the Big Ten. Only Northwestern has a class with a lower rating than the Spartans.
