The Bulldog Middle Infield Leads the Way in Doubleheader Sweep
STARKVILLE, Miss. — The Mississippi State Bulldog finish the week 4-0 and complete a much-needed doubleheader sweep over Mount St. Mary. The Bulldogs got a pair of nice starts from Khal Stephen and Jurrangelo Cijntje.
The duo combined for 12.2 innings allowed no runs and struck out 19. However, the starting rotation has been solid for MSU all season, but they got nice production from their nine-hole hitte and a guy made his return to the field.
David Mershon suffered an injury in the preseason and missed the first five games of the season and since then the South Carolina native has been on fire. Mershon is batting an even .500 and has driven in 12 runs.
Mershon finished the day with four hits and two RBIs.
This weekend the sophomore returned to the field after previously just being the designated hitter in his first four games. However, Mershon did not play at shortstop, a position where he played last year, and played quite well.
Mershon slid over to second base, and the talented freshman Dylan Cupp remained at short. Cupp has started all 12 games for MSU at shortstop, and the Georgia native is a natural.
Cupp makes every play at shortstop whether it be routine or a difficult play it does not matter the 6-2 190 pounder always makes it look silky smooth. However, Cupp had been struggling at the plate, but today the freshman broke through and had a big day at the plate.
Cupp racked up a pair of clutch two-RBI hits in both games, and the Bulldogs desperately needed someone to step up in the bottom of their lineup. If MSU can continue to get production from the bottom of the order and the top of the order remains potent it will be a step in the right direction for the Bulldogs.
MSU head coach Chris Lemonis had high praise for the youngster
“Two really big swings,” Lemonis said. “He's a good player. He's one of the better freshmen in the country,”
MSU has dug itself into a hole, but they needed a 4-0 week and they got it. Mississippi State returns to action Tuesday in Pearl against Southern Miss at 6 p.m. CT.
