Northwestern QB Cole Freeman talked to Wildcats Daily about his reason for choosing NU, what he likes to do in his free time and what he's most excited about this season. Keep reading to get to know one of the newest faces on the 'Cats squad.

QB Cole Freeman

Height: 6'1”

Weight: 197 lbs

Hometown: Morristown, NJ

High school: Delbarton School

Why he chose Northwestern:

Freeman said, "When I came into high school as a freshman I had 3 dream schools, and Northwestern was one of them. Right off the bat I loved how strong the academics were and the overall culture of the school from what I heard."

What he likes to do in his free time:

"I love playing pickup basketball, playing Xbox with my friends. I also love surfing in the summer and just hanging out at the beach."

What he's most excited about this upcoming season:

"I’m really excited to learn from the older quarterbacks and upperclassmen this season and be a part of a top program in the country. I am also really hyped to get in the weight room and put some work in with the guys."

Evaluation:

Freeman has shown he has all the qualities and skills to be a very capable quarterback at the collegiate level. In 2020 he led Delbarton to the No. 2 ranking in the state on MaxPreps and finished his high school career with 4,750 career passing yards.

What stands out most watching Freeman's tape is his ability to scramble out of the pocket. He looks more than comfortable making plays on his feet, often evading the defense with his surprising foot speed while still maintaining focus and surveying the field.

Freeman can also make throws while on the move off of one foot and across his body. At the high school level he flashed that ability to make plays with his feet, finishing with 16 rushing touchdowns.

Freeman gets good speed on his throws which helps him thread the needle through defenders and into the arms of his teammates. He also has the ability to float the ball over defenders right to the spot where only his teammate can catch it.

Playing time projection:

With transfer QB Ryan Hilinski joining the Wildcats this year, Freeman will likely find himself on the sideline for much of the season, but that isn’t a bad thing. Having a year or two to learn the playbook and pick up tips from Hilinski and the coaching staff will only help him when he’s given an opportunity. As stated earlier, he has all the qualities and skills to be NU’s quarterback of the future.
