Notre Dame DT Gabriel Rubio Is Out For The Spring
Irish Breakdown has confirmed that Notre Dame senior defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio is not with the team for the spring semester. Rubio is back home and is not enrolled in the school for the spring semester as he deals with what a source said are "personal matters."
Rubio was expected to be a key member of the defensive tackle rotation in 2024, but that is up in the air a bit now that he's away from the team. The expectation is that Rubio will be back, but that remains a question until he works through what he is dealing with.
At 6-5 and 306 pounds, Rubio provided much-needed size and power in the middle of the defensive line. He could eat up space against the run, but was also capable of making plays up the middle. When Rubio was out last season it was noticeable how smaller the next wave of defensive tackles were for Notre Dame.
Rubio racked up 28 tackles and four tackles for loss over the last two seasons while earning a key rotation spot for the Irish.
With Rubio out, there is an opportunity for both Jason Onye and Donovan Hinish to work for bigger roles up the middle. Both earned key rotation snaps this season, with Onye racking up 17 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss, and Hinish registered 10 stops and on tackle for loss.
Rising sophomores Devan Houstan and Armel Mukam are very talented young players that could also benefit from Rubio's absence. They could have a chance to make some noise this spring, as could early enrollee freshman Sean Sevillano, who is listed at 330 pounds.
