Notre Dame Lineman Joe Alt Is Looking To Cement His Elite Status At The Combine
Notre Dame is revered by many as the top program when it comes to develop offensive lineman for the NFL level. Historically speaking, there is a long list of tremendous players up front, including Zack Martin, Ronnie Stanley and Quenton Nelson in recent memory.
The next in line is former Irish All-American left tackle Joe Alt, who is fighting to be the first offensive lineman drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft this April. Later this week on Thursday, the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine kicks off with on-field workouts in Indianapolis.
Alt will be in attendance, hoping to impress all the NFL evaluators on site. Here is what is at stake for the former Irish star.
CURRENT PROJECTION
There has been a heavy debate dating back to the summer, and extended into the season. Who is the top offensive tackle in the 2024 NFL Draft? The two big names at the time were Alt and Penn State standout Olu Fashanu. Then names like Taliese Fuaga (Oregon State), Amarius Mims (Georgia) and JC Latham (Alabama) also entered the fold. Now taking a step back, it looks like Alt has asserted himself as the clear favorite and is fairly certain to be selected within the top seven overall selections come April.
WHAT’S ON THE LINE AT THE COMBINE?
At around 6-8 and 322 pounds, Alt brings the ideal body type you want at the left tackle position on the next level. He also has NFL bloodlines with his father John Alt having been an outstanding offensive lineman in his own right. There are a lot of boxes that Alt can check on paper.
The Combine is about him continuing to check the remaining boxes. Alt is such an excellent prospect that there isn’t a massive need for him to test if he chooses not to. If he does, he is expected to test very well. Alt is a former high school tight end with outstanding foot quickness and flexibility. Here are some numbers you would expect from Alt if he does test.
40-Yard Dash: 5.05 seconds
Vertical Jump: 32-34 inches
Broad Jump: 9 feet, 2 inches
3-Cone Drill: 4.7 seconds
Short Shuttle: 7.5 seconds
Bench Press: 25 reps
NEXT STEP
Alt is generally considered one of the elite prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft class. Barring a very poor testing section, there should be no need for Alt to retest at the Pro Day on March 21st. The team meetings will be the last big part of Alt’s process. He is a very easy evaluation and he needs to keep it that way when it comes to his character.
