Notre Dame has promoted Chad Bowden to the position of General Manager of the football program. This move was expected after Irish Breakdown learned that Bowden had turned down the same role at Michigan to stay with the Irish, and now that move has become official.

The role essentially creates a more streamlined talent acquisition process. Bowden has basically been doing this job as the program's director of recruiting, but with high school recruiting, the transfer portal and maintaining the current roster expanding in recent seasons it was necessary to ensure that there was a clear line of communication.

Bowden being promoted to this new position now ensures that all the aspects of talent acquisition and roster maintenance are working as one.

Head coach Marcus Freeman brought Bowden with him from Cincinnati when he was hired as Notre Dame's defensive coordinator. During that first season Bowden served as the director of recruiting for the Irish defense, but when Freeman was promoted to head coach he put Bowden in charge of the program's entire recruiting efforts.

Recruiting has taken off since Freeman and Bowden arrived, and its trending even higher when looking at the 2025 class. Going all the way back to 2009, only one Notre Dame recruiting class (2013) has earned more points or a higher per player average than the 2022, 2023 and 2024 recruiting classes, which are the groups that Freeman and Bowden have been a part of. The recruiting operation under Freeman and Bowden has resulted in the program adding more impact talent, but also adding more balanced classes, which is why the 2024 roster - on paper - has far fewer holes than rosters from past seasons.

Keeping Bowden is huge for Freeman and Notre Dame, and the move likely allows the Irish to not only remain a strong force on the recruiting trail, but if the on-field success improves the Irish will have a chance to recruit at a level we haven't seen since the early 1990s.
