Notre Dame Roundup: Sam Hartman As A Top 5 QB, Alpha Receiver, Michael Mayer Disrespect

Irish Breakdown discusses a number of topics about Sam Hartman, Notre Dame wide receivers, Michael Mayer's NFL Draft stock and more

Quarterback has been a problem position for Notre Dame for years, but the Irish are hoping that changes with the addition of Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman. We discussed several things about Hartman in our latest Irish Breakdown podcast.

We also discussed the wide receiver position, the NFL Draft movement for Michael Mayer and the odd way in which he's being evaluated, and we ended with a mailbag.

We kick things off with a breakdown of Hartman and where he stacks up among the nation's best returning quarterbacks. We give our list of Top 5 quarterbacks and broke down a few others that will be in the conversation.

Our top five consisted of Caleb Williams (USC), Drake Maye (North Carolina), Michael Penix Jr. (Washington), Jordan Travis (Florida State) and Hartman. We had the same Top 5 quarterbacks, but our order was a bit different, and we explained why.

Next we got specific with Hartman and Notre Dame. We broke down the areas where Hartman must thrive if he's going to lead Notre Dame to a College Football Playoff spot, and then a chance to compete for a title once they get there.

A year ago at this time we argued that Notre Dame didn't need an "alpha" at wide receiver since they already had one at tight end in Michael Mayer. That has changed for the 2023 outlook for a number of reasons, beginning with the fact Mayer isn't around. After breaking down why it is important for Notre Dame to have an alpha receiver (and hopefully two) we discussed the two players with the best chance to become that player - Tobias Merriweather and Deion Colzie.

Prior to our mailbag we discussed the odd overthinking that is going on in NFL Draft circles when it comes to Mayer. You can also read the article that this was based on HERE.
