Guerby Lambert Is The Final Essential Piece To Notre Dame's Gap Closing Offensive Class

Notre Dame has an outstanding 2024 offensive class, but Guerby Lambert is the final piece to making it elite

Notre Dame has put together quite the offensive class in the 2024 cycle, which is on the heels of an outstanding 2023 class. As good as the class is, it's not quite complete. There is one very important piece missing from the class, and that would be West Roxbury (Mass.) Catholic Memorial offensive tackle Guerby Lambert.

The foundation of the class is five-star quarterback CJ Carr and an electric group of receivers that is made up of Cam Williams, Isiah Canion and Micah Gilbert. Recent commitments from running back Kedren Young and offensive tackle Styles Prescod were important pieces to add.

Notre Dame has met all of its skill needs, and done so with extremely talented players. The offensive line class is solid, but it's not on the level of the skill positions. Prescod is a high upside player, and he joined a class that had powerful blocker Peter Jones and athletic tackle Anthonie Knapp. That's a quality trio, but it's not elite, and Notre Dame desperately needed two pure tackles in the class, which it currently doesn't have.

That is why Lambert is such an important player for the 2024 class. He is not only the kind of high level talent that turns a quality offensive line haul into one of the best in the 2024 cycle, he also adds a much-needed second pure tackle to the class.

Lambert is without question one of the nation's best offensive tackles. He has elite length, he's athletic, he's powerful, and despite being a right tackle so far in high school, Lambert has all the physical tools to be a big time left tackle.

Notre Dame signed nine offensive linemen in its two previous classes, but there just aren't enough pure tackles in those classes. Aamil Wagner is a natural tackle from the 2022 class, and the top signee in the 2023 class is Charles Jagusah, who is also a dominant tackle. Despite his ability to thrive at tackle, Jagusah could also force his way into an early role at guard, which would complicate the tackle depth chart even further.

Another 2023 signee - Sullivan Absher - will get a shot at tackle, but right now his game projects better inside. That's a lot of interior players in those classes, and both Jones and Knapp project inside as well. Landing Prescod was a very important first step towards restocking the tackle depth chart, but Lambert is needed to finish the job.

It's not just about landing a player that fills a numbers need. Lambert has the talent to continue Notre Dame's tradition of elite tackle play. Landing Lambert, and then developing him, would give the staff the kind of big time talent that could allow them to justify moving and keep Jagusah inside, should that be his fastest path to the starting lineup.

That's why Notre Dame's 2024 offensive class, as good as it is, won't be able to truly close the gap the way it needs to without landing Lambert. Add him to this class and Notre Dame's 2024 haul is without a weakness, and it would be the kind of gap closing class the Irish need to continue building a championship offense.
