Ohio State Guard Taylor Mikesell Drafted No. 13 Overall by Indiana Fever in 2023 WNBA Draft
Ohio State Buckeyes guard Taylor Mikesell's professional dreams became a reality on Monday in New York City when the Indiana Fever selected her with the 13th overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft.
Mikesell spent two seasons with the Buckeyes, one of three schools for which she played over her five-year college career. While at Ohio State, Mikesell was one of the best three-point shooters, drilling her shots 44.2% of the time, and averaging 17.9 points per game.
Maryland and Oregon were also stops on Mikesell's journey to Ohio's capital city, combining for a total of three years, two with the Terrapins before transferring to spend the 2020-21 campaign as a Duck.
"I'm just excited to get to work, be around a ton of incredibly talented players and go ahead and try and be a good addition to the team," Mikesell said.
Mikesell is not the first Buckeye to be chosen in the WNBA Draft, nor is she the first to go 13th overall.
16 other Ohio State players have made it to the highest level of women's basketball by way of the draft since the 1998 WNBA Expansion Draft when the Cleveland Rockers chose Adrienne Johnson with the eighth pick.
Speaking of the number eight, Mikesell is one of eight Buckeyes selected over the last two decades going back to 2011, and the third in a row to go to Indiana, along with both Kelsey Mitchell and Stephanie Mavunga in 2018.
Mitchell is still a member of the Fever and will join Mikesell for the 2023-24 WNBA season pending any offseason moves.
As for the position at which Mikesell was drafted, she is the third Ohio State player whose name has opened the second round of the draft in the history of the program. Courtney Coleman and Shayla Cooper both went 13th to the Connecticut Sun in their respective drafts back in 2003 and 2017.
