Preview: Ohio State Battles UConn in Women's NCAA Tournament Sweet 16
The Ohio State Buckeyes continue their time in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament push against the UConn Huskies on Saturday at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle, Washington.
The Buckeyes (27-7) are playing some of their best basketball in the tournament, making it to the third round after defeating James Madison and North Carolina.
Against the Tar Heels on Monday, senior guard Jacy Sheldon buried a game-winning shot with 1.8 seconds remaining, fading to her left from the middle of the paint. Sheldon had 16 points in the contest while senior forward Eboni Walker scored a career-high 15.
In the tournament, the Huskies (31-5) have gotten the best of Vermont with a 95-52 rout in the opening round, and a 77-58 victory against Baylor most recently to earn the trip to Seattle.
For the Huskies, junior forward Aaliyah Edwards' 17 points per game is the most among five UConn players with double-digit point averages.
Saturday's game against UConn marks Ohio State's 13th year in the Sweet 16 and second in a row, but will be the 29th consecutive appearance for the Huskies.
This weekend's matchup also marks the first time the Buckeyes will square off against senior forward Dorka Juhasz, currently in her second year with the Huskies after transferring to UConn from Ohio State following the 2020-21 season.
The Buckeyes have yet to beat the Huskies in their all-time series, entering the weekend with an 0-6 record against UConn. However, this will be the first time Ohio State and UConn have met in the NCAA Tournament.
The Buckeyes and Huskies have only played two of their six meetings at neutral venues, with the third time being this weekend in Climate Pledge Arena, which was originally built in 1962 but redeveloped when the National Hockey League expanded to Seattle in 2020.
Ohio State and UConn tip off their Sweet Sixteen matchup at 4 p.m. eastern time on ABC, Westwood One and (locally in Columbus), 97.1 The Fan.
