Is Ohio State Coach Ryan Day on the 'Hot Seat' Entering 2024?
Ohio State Buckeyes Ryan Day is ahead of a make-or-break season, according to ESPN.
Adam Rittenberg, a senior writer for the popular sports-media organization, published his list of eight coaches he thought could be dismissed from their schools if the 2024 campaign is not fruitful. Among those names was the Buckeyes helmsman.
Rittenberg’s list was separated into two categories: “hot seat” and “keeping an eye on.” Day was placed in the latter section, indicating he was not in immediate trouble of being fired.
“I'm not going to put a coach with a 56-8 overall record squarely on the hot seat,” Rittenberg said. “But after three straight losses to Michigan, no national championships, a new athletic director taking over (Ross Bjork) and Ohio State's all-in approach with personnel this winter, Day faces genuine pressure to win big in 2024.”
Rittenberg went on to say there are several directions in which this season could go, the results of which will determine how or where Day spends next season.
“The scenarios are fascinating: What if he beats Michigan but loses early in the CFP,” Rittenberg said. “What if he loses to Michigan and makes a deep CFP run? A fourth straight loss to the Wolverines…would be difficult for Day to overcome, despite all of the clear accomplishments he has had with the Buckeyes.”
Day is not the only coach from the Big Ten Conference on Rittenberg’s list. UCLA’s Chip Kelly is also slotted with Day in the “keeping an eye on” category.
