Buckeyes Hire Ex Dolphins Coach Joe Philbin As Offensive Analyst
Ohio State is adding another personnel member to its staff in 2023.
According to reports, the Buckeyes are hiring longtime NFL coach Joe Philbin as an analyst. Philbin spent the better part of his 39-year career coaching in the NFL.
Philbin, 61, served as the Miami Dolphins head coach from 2012-15. He posted a 24-28 record in three-and-half years, never finishing above 8-8. Philbin was fired four games into the 2015 season after a 1-4 start. He most recently worked for the Dallas Cowboys as the team’s offensive line coach from 2020 through last season.
Philbin has also worked for teams such as the Green Bay Packers (2003-11 and 2018) and the Indianapolis Colts (2016-17). Philbin served as Green Bay's offensive coordinator from 2007-2011, first working with Brett Favre in his final season and later helping Aaron Rodgers transform into a four-time MVP.
Philbin, who was part of the Packers’ 2010 Super Bowl team, returned to Green Bay in 2018 serving as the Packers' offensive coordinator and eventually taking over for Mike McCarthy as the team’s interim head coach after a 4-7 start. Under Philbin, the Packers went 2-2.
Beginning his coaching career at Tulane in 1984, Philbin last worked in college as Kirk Ferentz’s first offensive line coach at Iowa from 1999-2002. He also served in stints as an offensive coordinator at Northeastern (1995-96) and at Harvard (1997-98). Philbin also coached offensive lines at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (1986-87), the Merchant Marine Academy (1987-88), Allegheny College (1990-93) and Ohio (1994).
The Buckeyes are entering their fifth season with Ryan Day as head coach and their first with Brian Hartline at offensive coordinator. Ohio State finished 11-2 last season under the direction of Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year C.J. Stroud and made the College Football Playoff.
Since replacing Urban Meyer, Day has posted three 10-plus win seasons in Columbus. All time, he's 45-6.
