Ryan Day: Moving Date of Ohio State vs. Michigan Worth 'Long Discussion'
The final weekend in November is reserved for two things: Thanksgiving and the Ohio State-Michigan game.
However, the weekend "The Game" is played may be a little bit earlier in the regular season, as Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day voiced his opinion about potentially playing the Wolverines two or three times in a row.
"It's worth a long discussion on where that game should be placed," Day said at Big Ten Media Days Wednesday. "If it was the same as it was this past year, we'd be playing back-to-back games and, who knows, maybe playing them again in the playoffs, so I think that needs to be taken into consideration."
The past two seasons, the Ohio State-Michigan game has decided the Big Ten East division champion and the representative in the Big Ten Championship. Coaches and players alike have said "The Game" is better when there's everything at stake.
Day said the long-standing tradition of the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry means that "The Game" needs to be played every year no matter which week of the season it takes place during.
The Buckeyes' four-year head coach said there have been conversations surrounding moving "The Game" to a different weekend, but that "hard decisions" aren't going to be finalized anytime soon.
Day said "The Game" would matter no what week it's played, but his only concern with keeping the Buckeyes' matchup against the Wolverines in week 13 is potentially diminishing its significance for postseason play.
"If both teams are in the Big Ten Championship game already, then could it minimize 'The Game?' That's my concern," Day said. "Even if you played it week 11, week 10, no matter what, it's going to matter, but if you know you're playing them in the Big Ten Championship game already, it could be something we haven't experienced before. That's all. So again, I think it's worth a discussion."
