Does Prolonged Buckeyes QB Battle 'Favor' Devin Brown?

Ohio State Buckeyes quarterbacks Kyle McCord and Devin Brown have been neck and neck throughout camp, both garnering first-team repetitions.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are nearing the end of fall camp and, sooner rather than later, head coach Ryan Day will name the 2023 starting quarterback.

Day has said the two have been taking a split amount of first-team reps in fall camp, and with how long it's taken for one to separate himself from the other, there has been growing buzz about Devin Brown having overtaken Kyle McCord as the leader in the race.

"A lot of people thought it was just going to be Kyle McCord's job, and Devin Brown maybe could push but wouldn't really be in the mix there," former Ohio State linebacker Joshua Perry said on "Always College Football" Friday. "But, this thing is actually very, very close, and from the people I've spoken to, they're confident in either quarterback's ability to go out there and be successful.

"I think they're just looking for that consistency. It feels as this drags out a little bit more, it does start to favor a younger guy in Devin Brown who's got some really good movement skill and athletic ability."

Perry wasn't the only former Buckeye to weigh in on the quarterback situation in Columbus, as wide receiver DeVier Posey added his thoughts in a post on X Sunday.

Posey discussed the notion of McCord and Marvin Harrison Jr.'s prior quarterback-receiver relationship at St. Joseph's Preparatory School in Philadelphia being a reasoning both were offered by Ohio State, but not ultimately being the end-all, be-all in the starting quarterback decision.

"HS package deals are still a thing," Posey said in a post. "Did MH2 get a scholarship bc his HS QB was a 5 star recruit & he benefited? Or was his HS QB just throwing to a generational WR/Top 5 pick? Brown has intangibles, talent & true competitor. Ive picked #33 since I saw him last spring."

Day's starting quarterback battles in the past haven't been this close with decisions for Justin Fields and C.J. Stroud being a little more clear cut out of camp.

The age-old adage of if you have two quarterbacks you have none likely doesn't apply in Columbus this time around, as both former five-star signal-callers have reasonable upside.
