Kyle McCord Named Ohio State's Starting QB
The question of who Ohio State's starting quarterback finally has an answer.
Head coach Ryan Day said Kyle McCord will take the first snaps of the season for the Buckeyes when the season kicks off at Indiana on Sept. 2. Quarterback Devin Brown will also play in the game, Day announced Tuesday.
With the first practices of the season beginning next week, it was only a matter of time before a call was made as to who would be Ohio State's starting quarterback.
The decision of McCord over Brown was certainly the smarter choice from an experience standpoint.
McCord spent the 2022 season as the backup quarterback behind C.J. Stroud, who was selected second overall by the Houston Texans in the 2023 NFL Draft back in April.
The Mount Laurel, New Jersey native saw action in seven games in 2022, totaling 190 yards and a touchdown with a 80 percent completion percentage.
McCord still has significantly more game experience than Brown, whose contributions last season equate to one carry for a single yard.
Brown also spent part of the offseason recovering from a thumb injury, which kept him sidelined during Ohio State's annual Spring Game.
However, it is often said that pressure builds diamonds, and the competition against McCord for the 2023 starting role might have the added effect of speeding up Brown's development.
Additionally, the delayed revelation of the winner ensured the contest between the two quarterbacks would remain at the highest level for the longest possible time.
Now that a decision has been made, the Buckeyes can now proceed headfirst into fall practices as the start of the season looms ever closer.
