Buckeyes Camp: QB and Offensive Line Battles Updated
The Ohio State Buckeyes have kicked off the preseason training camp and all eyes are on position battles all up and down the roster. One position battle is specifically drawing the most attention, and rightfully so, as Kyle McCord and Devin Brown are competing to replace the departed C.J. Stroud as the starting quarterback.
Per coach Ryan Day, that competition is tight, and both McCord and Brown are going to split snaps with the first team in the weeks ahead.
McCord may have a slight advantage, as he boasts an extra year of experience over Brown, and he started drills to start camp just like he did back in the spring.
Whoever is under center to start camp will have a fully-intact offensive line for protection, as the starting line from the spring game carried over to the first day of camp, although those positions are still up for grabs.
Carl Hinzman is still the first-team center, Josh Fryar is at left tackle, and Zen Michalski is at right tackle. Matt Jones and Donovan Jackson are presumed to be the starting right and left guards. Jakob James, the backup center last season who was out for spring with an undisclosed injury, was also with the second team.
Providing depth to the offensive line is Luke Montgomery at left tackle and San Diego State transfer Josh Simmons at right tackle.
