Ohio State's Ryan Day Focused On Having 'Best' QB Room

While there are currently four viable quarterbacks on the roster, the Ohio State Buckeyes' battle under center is down to just two: Kyle McCord and Devin Brown.

Ohio State's quarterback situation is still in the same position it was after C.J. Stroud's NFL departure: we don't know.

Head coach Ryan Day said at Big Ten Media Days July 26 that Kyle McCord had an "edge" over Devin Brown due to the extra year of experience, but didn't give a percentage as to how far ahead he was. Day said Wednesday that the competition could extend into a situation where both McCord and Brown are taking snaps in games.

"Somebody has to emerge to be the starter," Day said. "And if you don't know, you just keep pushing forward. I'd like for somebody to step up and for that to happen, but you just don't know."

This wouldn't be the first time Ohio State has experimented with trotting out multiple quarterbacks into a season. After the Buckeyes' national championship in 2014, former head coach Urban Meyer couldn't decide in camp between J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones.

The two were looking over their shoulder all the way until the Michigan State game Nov. 21, 2015, the first of the Buckeyes' final three games in which Barrett started. In the 13-game season, Jones had more passing attempts in seven games and Barrett in six. However, in most games, both quarterbacks attempted a pass.

Day, McCord, Brown and Buckeye Nation would all like for one of the two to emerge to avoid another 2015 disaster under center that turned the quarterback room into a weakness when just the year prior it was a strength.

Day said no matter who starts, the Buckeyes need to "be the best quarterback room in the country."

"Whoever's playing in the field, the other three guys need to support him and keep pushing each other to be the best room," Day said. "Right now, that's the focus."
